Matariki is the Māori name for the star cluster known as the Pleiades. Traditionally for Māori, when it appeared just before dawn in late May or early June, it signalled the start of the Māori New Year.
On Friday, we made kites to celebrate Matariki .
Ancient Māori kite flying traditions have a highly symbolic connection to Matariki – the two were historically inseparable. Kites were seen as connectors between the heavens and earth.
